William Alston Pringle papers, 1844-1897.

Papers consist of legal documents, financial records, estate papers, related correspondence, and other items. Legal documents, including briefs, transcripts of interrogations, opinions, and other items, pertain to cases involving bankruptcies, estate disputes and settlements, and land and financial transactions. Included are estate papers of Isaiah Daniels (including accounts and receipts); court orders, estate accounts of Henry Missroon, and other documents pertaining to the case of James Missroon v. William Alston Pringle (trustee and guardian of Anna M. Missroon); and documents concerning a dispute over the estate of James H. Ladson. There are also notarized protests (1861-1869) for non-payment of bank notes by the People's National Bank and the Planters' and Mechanics' Bank of Charleston, S.C. Correspondence with J. Motte Alston and others chiefly pertains to legal matters. Other items include slave bills of sale (1859-1860), bonds, a mortgage (1846) of a slave belonging to Henry F. Heriot, receipts (1870's) for the shipment of groceries, hats, soap, saws, shovels, and other goods on the Philadelphia and Charleston Steamship Line, and a presidential pardon (1865) issued to J.T. Welsman.

Charleston, S.C. attorney. He was the son of William Bull Pringle (1800-1881) and Mary Motte Alston (1803-1884). William Alston Pringle was admitted to the bar in 1843, and was Recorder for the City of Charleston from 1858 to 1895. He married Emma Clara Pringle Smith in 1845.
